so, this is life
Hello friends,
Oh man - what a life update to share. The past couple of weeks have been emotionally rough for me, and on top of that, I’ve encountered so much change in the past six months. One thing that has really helped me during this time is journaling. So in this video, I voiced over some of my raw journal entries. I’m not the best writer, but I hope that letting these emotions and words out into the universe will help me heal. If you’ve read this far, here’s a reminder to give your loved ones a call ♥
xx,
Julia

    This happened to me while working for a Silicon Valley startup. They reduced the workforce through layoffs and pressured us to take on the work previously done by our colleagues. Things were bad before, they just got worse. I didn't have time to go to the gym, attend meetups, socialize, or engage in any personal activities. On weekends, I was scheduled to monitor the infrastructure, which was poorly paid unless an incident was triggered by our monitoring app. It reached a point where I was breaking down. I got extremely stressed, and it became evident in my interactions with people as I tend to holler when I'm overly stressed. In my last one-on-one with my manager, he expected me to patch AWS database clusters and resolve other pertinent issues, which would have taken me three extra hours until 9 pm. I usually signed out at 6 pm, and this extra work was unpaid as we were on a monthly salary, not hourly. The previous entire week I had done something similar and stayed late. That was my last day with them. I submitted my notice, not to the manager but to HR, and took sick leave for the entire notice period. With no new job lined up, I took a holiday to Thailand. Life felt good. I de-stressed and got back in shape, both mentally and physically. When I returned, I learned from my team that the company had started hiring from India and Phillipines. WTF! I dodged a bullet there. They laid off more people in EMEA and North America when the new hires got to speed. I had started interviewing again. This time, I was very careful and intentional about where to apply. I prioritized work-life balance, culture, and growth over pay. I received a few offers in the AI field, but these were from startups that were bootstrapping, and I suspected the workload would be overwhelming. Eventually, I got an offer with a very competitive pension, good pay, WFH, the ability to go to the office if I chose to, PTO, among other perks. The role is a bit different from what I was doing previously but still in tech, with a government agency. It's amazing, no corporate BS or pressure akin to the one I experienced in my previous role.

    Interesting choice of words. Would it really be settling? I've noticed a similar mindset from candidates coming from those type of companies. Something to think about.

  • @cornishpasty4344
    @cornishpasty4344 2 дня назад

    The recruiter really shouldn't do that. They should send an email with the details THAT DAY and then call back if the candidate wants to go over it further. That is not ok and frankly, incompetent and a waste of everyone's time. You're young. I'm not so young anymore. Don't take feedback too harshly. It's all subjective. If you keep taking feedback from EVERYONE you'll be going around in endless circles and never know who you are as a person or professionally. I have interviewed for so many roles in my lifetime and seen companies hire people instead of me who leave within 2 months, or I find out the recruiter lied to me with feedback, e.g. said the hired someone with more experience (she did not and her longest stint at a job was 1 year). Just be yourself. Keep your chin up and don't change for these people or you'll drive yourself insane and lose your confidence x

    Interviewing is like dating, line a TON of them up, as many as you can handle. Keep setting up a new one as attrition happens. This way when they drop out of the running you don't care as much cause you have others in the works. Also you can be a bit more choosy since you have options.

    So true. Life is like a roller-coaster. I'm also was and still facing the same problem as u. I decided to not to get the job offer as a SE because of the lot of pressure was on my head as a intern in the same company. After being unemployed I lost my father 😢. It's a miserable feeling I ever felt. I'm still trying to get a job. When you mentioned about your grandfather's lost and the things you have learned it felt so familiar for me as well.

    You're so mature, articulate and clearly bright! I'm sure you'll find your passion and a career that suits you. I'm sorry the job took such a toll on you mentally and physically. Working corporate is crazy tough and so draining. I think these types of jobs, the executives forget that people are not robots/machines and need healthy work life balance. It's crazy how they think anyone can work 12-14 hour shifts and not get burnt out. On the other hand they likely don't care and I'm glad that you realized what it was doing to you and put yourself first. Sometimes we have to take care of ourselves first and let everything else fall into place to just reset and recharge. You'll be just fine!

    Sending much love ❤ both my grandpas died within 12 months two years ago and I only have one grandma left. They were all pretty young. Sometimes I forget I don’t have either grandpa and I’ll often talk about them in the present tense. When my grandma died the grief hit me hard and it was like the world stopped. It was the first death I experienced of someone close to me. When my grandpas died, I was so busy and it happened so quickly it felt like the world kept spinning without them. I feel like I never got to process their deaths the same as my grandmas and I have trouble even remembering that time. Grief works in funny ways

    Sometimes it's better to wait until the waters are calm before crossing the river, rather than trying to cross during a storm. I think it might have been wise to think things through more carefully before making your decision and to plan your new chapter while still at your old job. Preparing thoroughly would have helped you become the best data scientist in your area of expertise!

They got me pretty late in life so it's probably going to happen way sooner than I'd like. Nothing to do but to let yourself feel your feelings and surround yourself with good people to get through it.

    As a manager with 18 yrs experience with SQL I agree with her assessment of SQL interview knowledge: the most I would expect a candidate to know is the CTE. There are obviously much more advanced uses of SQL, even more advanced uses of the CTE, but advanced uses are something we should be able to teach OTJ, personal opinion.

    I'm sorry for your loss, and I hopw you can find the strength during your grief. Relationship with grandparents is like a mystery to me. My father's parents had already passed when I was born, and my mother's parents were abroad, so as a child, my family didn't have enough money to travel and see tgem often. So, even when we kept in touch, it wasn't the same. I never got to know them well. I do understand that fear of loss, since my parents are now in that age in which I have to understand that time is not on our side, so I try to embrace those moments with them, to keep them in my memory and heart.

    I’m so sorry for your loss. I came to the US 10 years ago and I haven’t had a chance to visit my home country since. My grandmother passed away during my final exam week in my last semester, it was one of my regrettable moments that I didn’t make it home to see her. Three months later, my grandfather suddenly passed away. I didn’t make it to his funeral either. Grief is something that only time can heal, as least you have beautiful memories with your grandmother. My last hugs from my grandparents was 10 years ago when I said goodbye to them at the airport 😢

One thing I've learned through the years is that, like you said, they are never fully gone. As long as you remember them, they will always be here. We carry them with us because we wouldn't be who we are if it wasn't for them. Big hug to everyone who has gone or is going through a loss. <3
